French National Assembly rejects new motion of censure and approves Social Security budget

The French National Assembly rejected on Friday the last motion of censure presented by the left-wing coalition New Popular Ecologist and Social Union (NUPES) against the government, which obtained only 87 votes out of the 288 needed for it to succeed, leading to the final approval of the Social Security budget.

The mechanism of control to the Executive was presented by the parliamentary group after the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, activated this Wednesday for the seventh consecutive time this autumn the article 49.3 of the Constitution that allows to pass a law without the support of the House.

The Prime Minister criticized in the hemicycle that the succession of motions of censure has «considerably reduced the useful time for debate» for this budget. «Six motions of censure, more than in three years towards Michel Rocard», she has reproached, according to ‘Le Figaro’.

This budget has been approved on the eve of the end of the 50-day review period granted by the constitutional text and includes health prevention measures and the increase in the price of tobacco.

The Senate had rejected this Tuesday the Social Security financing bill for 2023, which prompted the Prime Minister to resort to this tool again. Shortly thereafter, the leader of the French opposition party (LFI), Mathilde Panot, announced the motion of censure voted on Friday, just two days after the failure of another motion of censure initiated by the same party.

The main opposition groups, La France Insoumise, of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, and Rassemblement Nationale, of Marine Le Pen, have been the promoters of several motions of censure in recent weeks which, for the moment, have not obtained the necessary votes to be approved.
