Ukrainian authorities have claimed that they have «liberated» 179 localities in the south of the country in recent days, following the recent withdrawal of Russian troops from the territories.
«Since the beginning of the week, our units on the right bank of the (river) Dnieper have vacated 179 localities covering more than 4,500 square kilometers,» Vladislav Nazarov, spokesman for the southern command, has reported in statements picked up by Unian.
Nazarov explained that the enemy «does not stop shelling the positions of the Armed Forces units and adjacent communities».
«The occupants continue to attack critical infrastructure, civilian property and the territories of the rear region,» the spokesman detailed.
Faced with the success of Ukrainian counter-offensives, the Russians withdrew last week from the capital of Kherson and other places on the western bank of the Dnipro.
International observers, according to the dpa agency, describe this as one of the biggest defeats of the Russian army in the war that has been going on for more than eight and a half months.
