The fundamentalist Taliban movement reported Sunday that five suspected Islamic State jihadists were killed in an assault on an Islamic State hideout in the Afghan capital, Kabul.
The operation, the Taliban Intelligence Directorate confirmed, occurred last night in the 15th security district in the north of the capital, according to a statement carried by the Afghan news agency Pajhwok.
Shortly afterwards, the usual Taliban spokesman and deputy information minister, Zabihullah Mujahid, said that the operation took place in the Jairjana district, populated mostly by ethnic Tajik residents.
«These people were members of a major network, which was involved in small explosions in Kabul city and wanted to carry out some destructive activities on a large scale,» he has made known on his Twitter account.
Islamic State has taken responsibility for bloody attacks in areas of the capital populated by Shiite and Hazara minorities, and have become the main security threat in the city since the Taliban recapture of Afghanistan, which culminated in August last year.
