The Taliban confirmed Sunday an order to prevent the brother of former Afghan President Hamid Karzai from leaving Afghanistan, although they denied that he is under arrest, as reported hours earlier by several media in the country.
Mahmud Karzai was intercepted at Kabul airport in the middle of a legal dispute with his partner Hamid Helmandi, a former advisor to the last president of the Afghan government, Ashraf Ghani, before the Taliban conquest of the country that culminated on August 15 last year.
The deputy spokesman of the fundamentalist movement, Bilal Karimi, explained to Tolo News that Mahmud Karzai, also a former Minister of Urban Development, has been banned from leaving the country because of a «legal dispute».
Karimi denied that Karzai was arrested on his way to the United Arab Emirates, without giving further details.
