A journalist was run over and killed on Sunday while covering the «long march» of protest by Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Jan and thousands of supporters towards Islamabad.
According to Channel 5 for which the reporter worked, the accident occurred when the journalist fell out of one of the vehicles of the former president’s entourage, which ended up running her over.
Jan immediately suspended all his events in the city of Sadokhe, 200 kilometers from the capital, where he was holding the third day of the protest.
The former prime minister said he was «shocked and deeply saddened by the terrible accident».
«I have no words to express my grief. My prayers and condolences go out to the family at this tragic time. We have cancelled our march today,» he let it be known on his Twitter account.
The Pakistani government had asked the party of former Prime Minister Tehrik e Insaf (PTI), to exercise responsibility in protecting the security of thousands of supporters who follow the deposed leader in his long march against the authorities.
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Jawaja Asif had warned that responsibility for the security of the march would fall on the PTI’s provincial governments in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, given that «98 percent» of the caravan’s route passes through this area.
