
The Chilean Government has approved this Tuesday a new extension of the state of emergency in the regions of La Araucanía and Biobío for an additional 15 days.
The senators have approved the request of the Executive — represented by the Ministers of Interior and Defense, Carolina Tohá and Maya Fernández, respectively — with 35 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions, as reported by the Upper House in a statement.
In the debate on the declaration of the state of emergency, the senators highlighted the decrease in acts of violence in recent months. However, several legislators have mentioned recent attacks, reason why they consider necessary «the ratified tool».
Meanwhile, in Congress, the measure obtained 113 votes in favor, 19 against and four abstentions.
The Government first issued this measure on May 16 of this year, since then, the Executive has extended the state of exception by means of decrees.
