
The European Commission on Thursday announced an additional $50 million in humanitarian aid for the South East Africa region, which will be used to combat food insecurity and malnutrition, improve access to basic services, enhance disaster preparedness and promote education in emergencies across the region.
Half of all funds will go to Mozambique, which will benefit from $25 million, while Madagascar will receive $13.3 million, $7.4 million will go to Zimbabwe and $4.3 million will be distributed to Lesotho, Malawi and African regional projects.
The announcement took place in Madagascar, where the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, went, where he reaffirmed the solidarity with the island located in an area »increasingly affected by the effects of climate change and environmental degradation».
»We are stepping up our commitment to help the people of Madagascar and the rest of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean region by supporting reinforced disaster preparedness and response to climate-related emergencies,» he said.
