
On March 10, Johns Hopkins University will stop updating its daily coronavirus pandemic death toll, an essential resource for hundreds of media outlets and citizens around the world seeking information on the impact of the health crisis.
Engineering professor Lauren Gardner, who launched the project with a student on March 3, 2020, has described the outcome as a «bittersweet» moment although «it’s also appropriate to leave it.»
The so-called Coronavirus Resource Center comprised a detailed table of deaths and cases by compiling official data from all countries of the world, to which she later added a tally of the number of vaccines inoculated so far.
Over the months, the website grew in importance to the point that the White House came to use it as a private source as the project expanded to ultimately record more than 2.5 billion hits.
