The family of George Floyd, an African-American citizen who died while being arrested by Minneapolis city police officers in 2020, will attend the funeral of Tyre Nichols, the young black man who died from injuries sustained by five police officers after a beating in the city of Memphis.
This has been reported by the lawyer for Nichols’ family, Ben Crump — who also represented Floyd’s relatives — in statements to TMZ, detailing that several of Floyd’s relatives will attend the funeral, which will take place this Wednesday at the Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church in Memphis, in the state of Tennessee.
While the families have yet to meet in person, Floyd’s loved ones have already offered their condolences to the grieving family of Nichols, who was brutally beaten by police officers last January 7, dying three days later.
«We are definitely rallying around Tyre’s family with our prayers with our thoughts,» a cousin of Floyd’s, Thomas McLaurin has highlighted to the network, WNCN, highlighting that they have been through what Nichols’ family is currently going through.
Nichols, 29, died Jan. 10 from injuries inflicted by five former Memphis police officers, who will be prosecuted for allegedly committing felony murder.
Floyd, meanwhile, lost his life after an officer knelt on his neck for several minutes despite telling him he could not breathe.
Floyd’s death, which was videotaped by bystanders at the scene, generated a wave of outrage globally, with mobilizations and marches that sometimes resulted in riots, and put the racism of U.S. institutions back on the table with the Black Lives Matter movement.
