The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned on Monday the suicide attack perpetrated inside a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, capital of the province of Jiber Pakhtunkhwa (north), which has so far left 59 dead and 157 wounded.
Guterres recalled that freedom of religion is a universal human right: «It is particularly abhorrent that the attack took place in a place of worship,» reads a UN statement.
Guterres’ spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, explained that the Secretary-General has expressed «his deepest condolences to the families» of the victims and reiterated «the solidarity of the United Nations with the Government and people of Pakistan in their efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism».
More than 59 people have been killed and around 150 injured in a suicide attack perpetrated Monday by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), known as the Pakistani Taliban, inside a mosque in the Pakistani city of Peshawar, capital of the province of Jiber Pakhtunkhwa (north).
A spokesman for the Lady Reading Hospital, Mohammad Asim, has informed the newspaper Dawn of the latest number of dead and wounded, and it is not excluded that the figure may increase, due to the seriousness of some of the wounded and to the fact that there are still people buried under the rubble of the building.
Among the dead is the imam of the Sahibzada Nurulamin mosque, as confirmed by the police. The suicide bomber had been in the front row during a prayer at the mosque before setting off the explosive charge he was carrying, after which the TTP released a statement on its propaganda channels claiming he was a member of the group.
