The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, has expressed his support for his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in the face of the assault by Bolsonar supporters on the «legitimate power of the people’s votes».
«We from here, from this solemn act (…) send all our support to the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, to Brazilian democracy, and we repudiate the assault on public institutions by the neo-Nazi, neo-fascist groups of Bolsonarism,» said Maduro during a council of ministers.
«They showed us, precisely, the true face of the pro-imperialist extreme right. In Brazil they call it bolsonarista, here they call it guaidosista, but in the end it is the same extreme right as those who want to seize power and do not accept the legitimate power of the votes of the people», added the Venezuelan president.
In this sense, Maduro affirmed that «the pro-imperialist extreme right wing» intends to «cut the hands of the people» and to prevent the initiation of social change processes. «That is the objective of the assault on power in Brazil», he reiterated.
Maduro’s words come after hundreds of supporters of Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro assaulted the seat of state powers on Sunday, thus raising tensions to the maximum in the first days of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s mandate, against whom they are calling for a coup d’état.
