China’s new foreign minister, Qin Gang, has bid farewell to his post as ambassador to the United States with a message of thanks in which he confessed himself «impressed» by the number of «hardworking, friendly and talented» Americans he has met.
Qin had served as ambassador to Washington since July 2021, at a time with «serious challenges» for relations between the two powers. During this time, he has sought to «serve as a bridge» linking Beijing and Washington with a view to entering «a new era.»
«I would like to express my sincere thanks to the people of the United States for the strong support and help given to me at the Chinese Embassy,» Qin wrote on Twitter, which has reviewed the contacts maintained and has put the number of US states visited at 22.
As ambassador, he boasts of having made «many friends», and now as minister he hopes to continue working for the sake of dialogue. In this sense, he advocated «mutual respect» and «peaceful coexistence», without at any time alluding to political or commercial tensions between Beijing and Washington.
