UN Secretary General António Guterres has said that the «powerful appeals» of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI on behalf of the «marginalized» and his calls to reduce the gap between rich and poor «are more relevant than ever.»
Guterres lamented in a statement the death of the former Pontiff, whom he remembered as a «tireless» person in the search for peace and «resolute» in the defense of human rights.
«We remember his visit in 2008 and his speech to the United Nations, with a call to ‘build international relations in a way that allows every person and every people to feel that they can make a difference,'» he added.
The UN chief offered his condolences to Catholics around the world and to all those who have been «inspired» by the figure and speeches of the late Pope Emeritus.
