The first lady of Chile, Irina Karamanos, announced Thursday the closure of the office of Sociocultural Coordination of the Presidency, a body associated with the office and which she promised to dissolve months ago.
Thus, the first lady of Chile will no longer have a team of advisors and will no longer use the space reserved for this body at the seat of government, the Palacio de la Moneda, as reported by the newspaper ‘La Tercera’.
Karamanos considers that this decision will facilitate the coordination between the organizations and foundations with the specific ministry of their sector and that the presidency of the Sociocultural Coordination will be assigned by each ministerial portfolio and not by the head of state.
Thus, the Ministry of Women will be in charge of appointing the presidency of the Foundation for the Promotion and Development of Women; the Ministry of Education will be in charge of assigning the leadership of the Itegra Foundation, and so on with each ministerial area.
Karamanos emphasized that this measure fulfills part of the commitment acquired to review the institutional role of the position of First Lady of Chile in order to «transform it» and «update it» with «a contemporary look».
«It is a proud step in the sense of being able to innovate the look that can be had of a presidential couple or of the stereotypes culturally associated to this role of first ladies,» he said.
For his part, the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, also present at the event, celebrated the fact that the First Lady’s decision fulfills the commitment he made when he assumed the office of Head of State last March.
