The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has advocated this Friday to extend beyond the Christmas holidays the truce in the social protests that have been registered in the country in recent weeks and in the framework of which more than twenty people have died.

«I want to tell those politicians and leaders who are behind the violence that this truce should not be just for Christmas or New Year, but that it should be (…) from now on», said Boluarte before the microphones of RPP radio station.

The president pointed out that it is only through peace that the institutions will be able to reach «good agreements» and solve those «problems» that affect the Andean society and that «with just reason the brothers and sisters of Peru are demanding».

Peru has been the scene of protests for more than two weeks following the dismissal and subsequent arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, accused of attempting a «coup d’état» by dissolving Parliament and decreeing a government of exception.

That decision was not supported by the powers of the State and, finally, Castillo was removed from his post in favor of Boluarte, until then ‘number two’ of the Head of State.

The situation has led to social protests whose main demands are the removal of Boluarte from the Andean Presidency and the calling of new elections.
