A signed copy of a transcript of last week’s insult by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to Opposition Leader David Seymour during a heated parliamentary debate has fetched NZ$100,100 (just over €59,000) at a charity auction.
The auction of that transcript is a joint initiative of Ardern and Seymour, whose signature also appears, to raise funds for the fight against prostate cancer. The winner is a 68-year-old man named Julian Shorten, who has acknowledged that he will have to take out a loan to meet the payment.
Shorten now owns a framed sheet on which you can read how Ardern called the leader of the New Zealand Conservatives an «arrogant prick.» Accustomed to rivalry, the two agreed to turn the episode – for which the prime minister apologized – into something positive.
«This is a historic moment in New Zealand politics,» said Shorten, who praised that the two «instead of turning the issue into something toxic, they turned it into something good,» reports 1News.
In a message on social networks, the prime minister said she was surprised by the value that the piece of paper has acquired and was pleased that from «a setback» it has become an important donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation. In turn, Ardern wanted to thank those who have bid, but also Seymour for his «sportsmanship».
