European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has written to Twitter’s new owner, tycoon Elon Musk, to invite him to take part in a «frank and public» debate with MEPs on the role of the social network and new European rules on transparency, disinformation and digital services.
In the letter, dated Monday, December 19 and accessed by Europa Press, Metsola points out the «central role» of Twitter in the «democratic life» of the European Union for its weight in the public discourse and therefore stresses the importance of adhering to EU rules.
In this context, the Maltese conservative also warns that the social network should not become «unintentionally» a «catalyst» for hate speech, electoral interference or disinformation.
Metsola therefore urges Musk to accept the invitation to hold a «frank and public» debate with MEPs of the parliamentary committees on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO).
The President of the European Parliament recalls in her invitation that the European Union is building a strengthened regulatory framework for digital services, including new rules to prevent abuses by large platforms and measures for greater transparency.
The European Parliament, which «represents about 450 million citizens,» is also involved as a legislator in the development of these rules, stresses Metsola, who also points out to Musk that other top executives of U.S. companies have participated in public hearings in the European chamber.
