The European Union on Monday expressed its support for the political line taken by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte in the context of the crisis in the country following the ouster of Pedro Castillo, although it condemned the use of violence and excessive use of force following the death of 25 citizens in protests demanding the call for early elections and the release of Castillo.
«The EU reaffirms the importance of ensuring political stability and addressing the political and social crises in Peru in full respect of the constitutional order, the rule of law and human rights. The EU supports the ongoing political efforts led by President Dina Boluarte,» said a statement from the EU External Action Service.
Precisely the new Peruvian president has informed this Sunday of the dismissal of the prime minister, Pedro Angulo, only ten days after his appointment, as part of a cabinet reshuffle and in the midst of a wave of protests in the country led by Castillo’s followers.
In this sense, the EU insists on the right to peaceful protest of Peruvians and condemns «any use of violence and excessive use of force», after showing its «concern» about reports of the death of dozens of people in anti-government protests.
«More than two dozen people have died, some of them with firearms, and many more were injured during recent demonstrations,» said the EU diplomacy, which calls on political actors in the country to work in a spirit of dialogue and to reduce tensions in Peru.
In this regard, Boluarte maintains that his Executive has ordered «the right measures» to contain the acts of violence, by establishing the use of tear gas and not pellets, despite some images that have spread through social networks. «We have given the right measures to call the country to calm, but above all to take care of life and health, and also people’s businesses,» he has assured.
Castillo is in preventive custody for the crimes of rebellion, conspiracy, abuse of authority and disturbance of public tranquility. The former president will initially serve 18 months in the same prison where former president Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000) is serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity.
