The Yesh Atid party of the still Israeli Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, has condemned the return to the political front line of former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who on Sunday received, after his victory in the November 1 legislative elections, a mandate to form a «government of destruction».
«It is a black day for democracy in Israel,» according to a statement from the formation published moments after the conclusion of the handover ceremony.
The party recalls that Netanyahu is on trial for corruption and «blackmailing his accomplices,» in the words of the formation, with the «common goal of freeing him from the process and rolling back the State of Israel.»
The party has also harshly criticized Netanyahu’s decision to compromise with the far right in order to return to power.
«We will never surrender either our country or our liberal values, nor will we allow the future of our children to be threatened,» Yesh Atid added in the statement.
