Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assured on Friday that his government will make Turkey the most disaster-ready country in the world» after the severe consequences of the earthquakes that took place on February 6 on the Turkish-Syrian border.

Speaking at the closing of a meeting of Turkey’s National Risk Shield, the Turkish leader expressed his gratitude to the scientists who attended the meeting to share their findings and proposals to improve the country’s resistance to earthquakes, Anatolia news agency reported.

We will make the February 6 earthquakes, one of the biggest loss of life and destruction in our history, the beginning of a new milestone in disasters,» Erdogan said, maintaining that Turkey will be the most disaster-ready country in the world.

»Turkey will be able to respond faster and more effectively after disasters, not only with a common mind, but also with a common conscience, a common morality and a common vision,» he remarked.

In this regard, he referred to the renovation of the stock of buildings destroyed or damaged by the earthquakes, warning that the builders’ options to circumvent safety protocols this time »have been destroyed».

Therefore, he expressed his hope that from now on, both the administration, society and the scientific world will be »faster, more practical, more result-oriented», according to the agency.

»I think no one has any doubt that we must act. Turkey has reached the level of seeing the disaster problem as a whole rather than one by one,» Erdogan added, bringing to the present that the country must struggle »with many risks at the same time.»

»We cannot separate ourselves from fires, floods, landslides, terrorism and the refugee crisis. It is imperative that we fight them all together. We see it as a first step towards building a new paradigm in disaster management,» he added.
