The Colombian Minister of Justice, Néstor Osuna, has confirmed that the Government has already commissioned a study to demilitarize the National Police, which would include, among other measures, ceding its control to the department he heads, thus taking it away from Defense.
The final report will not be known until after Easter, but Osuna has already advanced what its conclusions may be in an interview to a government radio station. «It seems that the best thing would be to transfer (the Police) to the Ministry of Justice, because the Ministry of Justice defines the criminal policy of the State, because it is the one that articulates the relations with the judiciary,» he explained.
The role of the security forces has been a recurrent motive of debate in the South American country, among other issues, due to the alleged excesses committed in the repression of social mobilizations. The Minister of Justice is confident that the institution can be «the best ally of the citizen», according to a press release from the Executive.
The study commissioned by the authorities also contemplates training measures for police officers, with the aim of favoring conflict resolution and making citizens feel confident enough to bring any possible problem to them.
