Lawyers for former U.S. President Donald Trump found and turned over to the Justice Department in January new classified documents, as well as a laptop belonging to one of his aides, that were still at the former president’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

The discovery of this new package of documents — which also included an empty folder labeled «Classified Evening Information» — occurred in mid-January, when Trump’s legal team searched the home for more confidential files in the former president’s possession, according to ABC News.

Trump’s lawyer, James Trusty, handed over the binder with the classification markings to federal investigators a few weeks ago and also reported that the information had been electronically copied onto a laptop computer belonging to an aide to the tycoon.

This new finding comes at a time when the Justice Department is separately investigating Trump and the now president of the United States, Joe Biden, because both had among their tenures classified documents when they no longer held any public office.

FBI agents searched Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in August for these documents after the former president refused to turn them over to U.S. authorities. Among them was information on the military defenses of several states, including that of a government with nuclear capabilities.

Meanwhile, Biden’s lawyers found classified documents in the U.S. president’s private offices that he kept in his possession after the end of his term as Barack Obama’s vice-president. However, the tenant of the White House has shown from the beginning his willingness to cooperate with Justice during the investigation.

According to U.S. law, the relevant authorities must hand over classified documents in their possession at the end of his term, since the disclosure of these papers could cause «damage» to national security.
