The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, has advocated this Friday for unity and coordination among the allies supporting Ukraine when studying the supply of fighter jets to Kiev in the framework of the Russian aggression.

At a press conference after the European summit, which was attended by the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, who insisted on his request to the EU-27 to supply more weapons, including the supply of fighter planes, Sanchez said that Spain «will study» the requests made by Ukraine.

The leader of the Executive stressed that «the important thing» is to maintain «coordination and unity» among allies in the face of the crisis created by Russia, insisting that these two elements have been the «great strength» against Moscow.

For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron said that he «does not exclude» any scenario regarding the supply of fighter jets. «The priority must be to send help to resist the coming weeks,» he has stressed, insisting that the allies should focus on sending the military material quickly that is most needed and recalling that the dispatch of aircraft «will not be next week.»

Macron has reminded that Ukrainian pilots will have to be trained on these fighter jets. «I do not exclude anything, but it does not correspond right now to the needs,» he has summed up.

The Finnish Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, pointed out that she «does not rule out anything» at the moment. She has opted for «making it clear» that Europe will help Ukraine in any way it can «for as long as it takes». «And of course we should talk more about heavy weapons,» she said.

Zelenski has discussed this Thursday with the leaders of the European Union in different meetings by groups of countries the provision of military equipment, including fighter jets, in appointments from which, however, no concrete announcement has been made.

The meetings have taken place in a reduced format and in turns, so that all European leaders could discuss face to face the military support they provide to Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, at a time when the international community recognizes that the war is going through a key moment in which the supply of weapons to Kiev is becoming more important.

In their summit conclusions, the EU-27 leaders put in writing their commitment to maintain support on the economic, political and military front in the face of Russian aggression. «The EU will maintain and seek to further increase collective pressure on Russia to end its war of aggression and withdraw its troops and military equipment from Ukraine,» the text reads.

In addition, the European bloc takes up Zelenski’s gauntlet in its peace proposal and reaffirms the commitment to work «actively» with Ukraine on this front and to ensure the widest possible international involvement.
