U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated Wednesday that he is not seeking a conflict with China and assured that relations with the Asian giant are no longer strained after the downing of the alleged Chinese spy balloon that flew over U.S. territory.
Although he has not spoken with Chinese President Xi Jinping since the balloon episode, Biden assured that his team maintains contact with the Chinese government and that relations have not worsened since then, according to Bloomberg.
«Look, I made it very clear to Xi Jinping that we’re going to fully compete with China, but we’re not going to seek conflict. And that’s been the case so far,» Biden reiterated in statements to the press.
The U.S. president’s remarks come a day after he warned China in his State of the Union address that it is «not a good idea» to bet against the United States and said he will act to protect U.S. sovereignty if it is threatened.
«I will not apologize because we are investing to strengthen America. Investing in American innovation, in industries that will define the future and that the Chinese government is trying to dominate,» the White House tenant asserted during his speech.
