The fire that broke out on Monday in the Turkish port of Alexandretta in the wake of the strong earthquakes that have left more than 5,000 dead in Turkey and Syria continues on Tuesday despite the work of firefighters, who are trying to put out flames that have already left hundreds of containers of goods on fire.
The raging fire continues to rage at the port facilities, which are located in Hatay province, near Kahramanmaras, the worst hit by the earthquakes. Most of the affected containers had not been unloaded, according to information from the Anatolia news agency.
While the cause of the fire is unknown, many of the containers overturned after the first quake of magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale. A large plume of smoke could be seen over the port on Tuesday, where firefighters are still battling the blaze.
The port, one of Turkey’s largest in the eastern Mediterranean area, has been out of operation since Monday.
