A woman and a child have died when the migrant boat they were traveling on in the waters of the Aegean Sea capsized, the Greek Coast Guard said Sunday.
After recovering the lifeless bodies of the couple, rescuers found 41 migrants on a remote beach on the island of Leros, all of them survivors of the shipwreck.
Among them were babies, women and men with mobility problems, who have been transferred to the island’s identification center.
Then, the Coast Guard has launched a rescue operation to try to find other survivors of the shipwreck, according to the statement published by the newspaper ‘Kathimerini’, in its digital edition.
The search involves three Coast Guard vessels and a Super Puma helicopter by sea, in addition to police on land.
