Costa Rica’s unemployment rate stood at 11.7 percent in the last quarter of 2022, totaling 287,000 people, according to data released Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC).
This figure is 0.3 tenths lower than that recorded in the previous quarter and is two points below the rate recorded in the fourth quarter of 2021.
By gender, unemployment climbed to 16 percent among women, while it stands at 8 percent for men. Both figures are lower than those recorded in the previous quarter (8.9 percent and 16.5 percent, respectively). In terms of the number of people, Costa Rica has 128,000 unemployed men and 159,000 unemployed women.
In this quarter, 43.9 percent of the employed population was in the informal sector, equivalent to a total of 953,000 people, of which 582,000 were men and 371,000 women. In percentage terms, informal employment is higher among women (44.5 percent versus 43.4 percent). The total figure is higher than that recorded in the July-September quarter, when approximately 931,000 Costa Ricans were in informal employment.
