The president of Brazil’s Supreme Court, Judge Rosa Weber, opened the new judicial year on Wednesday promising to impose «the rigor of the law» against those who participated in any way in the coup attacks on the Esplanade of the Ministries on January 8.
«Those who conceived it, practiced it, inspired it and those who financed it will be held accountable with the rigor of the law in the different spheres, only in this way will the constitutional order be reaffirmed», said Weber in her opening speech, according to Brazilian media.
The plan of the Supreme Court was accompanied by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, during a solemn act in which images were shown of the destruction suffered by the seat of the court during the assault of that mob of followers of Jair Bolsonaro.
«In this same plenary fully reconstituted after the criminal invasion of last January 8 by a demented mob moved by hatred and irrationality, I reaffirm my profession as a judge,» stressed the judge, who has promised an «uncompromising defense» of the Constitution and the democratic and rule of law.
Despite those attacks carried out by that «ignorant» and «irrational» mob, Weber stressed that they could not destroy the «spirit of democracy», which will continue to «illuminate the minds and hearts» of the Supreme Court justices. «Let the enemies of freedom know that on the sacred ground of this court, the democratic regime remains unshakable,» he warned.
For his part, President Lula has praised the work of the Supreme Court justices during the mandate of Jair Bolsonaro, whose criticisms and attacks against the institution were constant to the point that they motivated the wrath of the thousands of people who violently stormed on the headquarters of the three branches of government.
«The end of that period surely marked the hardest test of Brazilian democracy since the Constitution of ’88,» said Lula, who highlighted «the decisive role» of both the Supreme Court and the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) «in the defense of Brazilian society.»
«From this court, against which the greatest hatred of the aggressors was turned, courageous and absolutely necessary decisions are made to confront and stop the regression, the negationism and the political violence», he said.
«Like any other person who values democracy, I was outraged when I visited this house the night after the terrorist attacks (…) Beyond a reconstructed plenary, I see the courage of the judges in the defense of our Magna Carta», he emphasized.
«This court acted and continues to act to identify and hold accountable for their crimes those who savagely attacked the will of the ballot box. History must record and recognize this heroic page of the Brazilian judiciary», praised President Lula.
