At least 15 members of the Syrian security forces were injured on Monday when a bomb exploded as their bus passed on the road connecting the capital Damascus with the southern province of Deraa, officials confirmed.
The Syrian Interior Ministry said in a statement posted on its Facebook account that seven of the wounded are in serious condition, so it is not ruled out that the attack could cause deaths among the security forces.
It also stressed that the attacked bus was returning to Damascus after the agents «fulfilled their tasks in Deraa», before accusing «unidentified terrorists» of the attack. For the moment no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
«Immediately, patrols from several police units in Deraa province moved to the scene to treat the wounded, who were transferred to various hospitals. Investigations are underway to determine the identity of the terrorists and take legal action against them,» he reiterated.
Attacks of this kind are relatively frequent in Syria, which has been mired in war since 2011 following the violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations in the wake of the ‘Arab Spring’. In October, 18 soldiers were killed in Damascus in a bomb attack that also left 27 wounded.
