Chile’s Constitutional Court has declared admissible the appeals filed by the opposition to revoke the controversial pardons granted by the country’s president, Gabriel Boric, at the end of last year.
The benches of Chile Vamos and the Democrats party seek with this maneuver that the Justice declares unconstitutional the pardons to a dozen people arrested in the framework of the social protests of 2019, and among whom are people with a criminal record.
In response to these accusations of unconstitutionality, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Luis Cordero, has reiterated on successive occasions that the pardons were applied in compliance with administrative regulations and within the legal framework.
«What is being debated here are acts, and the acts are based on files that are processed as pardons have been classically processed», said Minister Cordero, as reported by the Chilean television channel T13.
In this sense, Cordero remarked that the Executive is going to «defend in court» the measures of pardon granted by Boric, arguing not only the rules in force but also the previous jurisprudence in these same issues.
This is the first time in the history of Chile that pardons granted by a president have been challenged in court. The controversy has already claimed the heads of Marcela Ríos and Matías Meza, who resigned from their posts as heads of the Ministry of Justice and the Presidential Chief of Staff, respectively.
