The United States Justice has issued an indictment on Tuesday against Mexican citizen Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, alias ‘Tony Montana’, for allegedly committing the crime of international trafficking of cocaine and methamphetamine.
According to a federal court in Washington, Oseguera Cervantes, 64, from Michoacán in southern Mexico, is charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and methamphetamine for importation into the United States, as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Antonio Oseguera is the brother of Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG) leader Nemesio Oseguera, ‘El Mencho. The CJNG, based in the state of Jalisco, is one of the largest, most dangerous and prolific drug cartels in Mexico, the US Justice Department detailed in a statement.
«The CJNG is responsible for trafficking significant quantities of illegal drugs into the United States for profit and employing violence to further its objectives,» the release reads.
In this regard, ‘Tony Montana’ is charged with distributing five kilograms or more of cocaine and 500 grams or more of methamphetamine for importation into the United States from January 1998 through December 2022, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense from January 2000 through December 2022. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison.
Mexican authorities confirmed in late December the arrest of nearly thirty alleged members of the Jalisco Cartel – New Generation (CJNG) in a major blow against the organization.
These arrests came in addition to that of Antonio Oseguera, alias «Tony Montana,» in the early hours of December 20 in the town of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, in the state of Jalisco.
Following the arrest of ‘Tony Montana’, Jalisco authorities declared themselves on alert for a possible cartel response similar to the one that occurred in October 2019 when the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán, son of renowned drug trafficker ‘Chapo Guzmán’, led to violent clashes.
