The European Parliament on Wednesday elected Luxembourg Socialist Marc Angel as vice-president of the chamber to replace Eva Kaili, the Greek Socialist also dismissed for her alleged involvement in the Qatar bribery scheme and who is in custody in Belgium.
In a process with several rounds of voting, Angel has won over the candidacy of Annalisa Tardino, MEP of Matteo Salvini’s League, and Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield, French representative of the Greens.
The Luxembourg Socialist will occupy the position of fifth vice-president in the Bureau of the European Parliament, which has an organization chart of 14 vice-presidents with different responsibilities.
In this way, the group led by the Spanish MEP Iratxe García has managed to retain this position, after the corruption scandal that has splashed its ranks. Before the vote, the Socialists defended Angel’s candidacy as a way of «leading the reform process necessary to fight corruption and interference» in the European Parliament.
The institution elected only a year ago to its fourteen vice presidents for the remaining two and a half years of mandate, a distribution negotiated by the groups every half term and that in this case has been respected so that the Socialists maintain this position.
