Two children have been killed and two others injured when a mine once laid by the Islamic State jihadist organization in northeastern Syria exploded.
The explosion occurred in the town of Al Dweir in eastern Deir Ezzor governorate, which is under the control of Syrian forces and Iranian-backed militias, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights organization said Sunday.
The London-based Observatory, with sources inside the country, has documented the deaths of nine civilians, including a woman and seven children, due to explosions of old landmines, unexploded shells and bombs across Syria since early 2023.
In addition, 21 civilians, including 14 children and two women, have been injured in the same period by the detonation of these munitions placed by the organization during its «caliphate» in Syria until its territorial defeat in 2017, as well as by other armed groups.
