The Peruvian Congress has decided to disqualify Congressman Freddy Diaz, accused of rape, for ten years, thus rectifying the vote held the day before, in which the Andean Parliament did not reach enough votes for the dismissal.
With 77 votes in favor, one against and four abstentions, the Peruvian legislative chamber has adopted the proposal of the Subcommittee of Constitutional Accusations (SAC), which proposed the disqualification of the legislator after he was accused of raping a congressional worker, reported ‘La República’.
Thus, Diaz will not be able to hold any public office for the next ten years. In fact, the congressman himself, at the end of his speech, has alleged that, if the disqualification against him is approved, it would constitute a «serious affectation» to his political career.
The day before, the Peruvian Congress rejected SAC’s petition with 60 votes in favor, two against and 21 abstentions (distributed among all political forces, from left to right). Despite the fact that most of the deputies were in favor of his disqualification, the 66 votes needed to approve the SAC’s report were not reached, as reported by ‘El Comercio’.
Freddy Díaz, now a former member of the Alianza para el Progreso party, allegedly committed a crime of sexual violence by taking advantage of a female parliamentary worker when she was drunk to force her to have sex.
According to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’, the complainant reported that she was drinking alcohol with the congressman while they were talking about work issues. After that, taking advantage of her unconsciousness, the congressman allegedly committed the rape.
