At least one person has died and more than 40 have been injured after an explosion in a clandestine store of pyrotechnic products in the town of Pachacútec, located in the province of El Callao, in western Peru.
The head of the Fire Brigade of the province, Carlos Gallardo, confirmed that the fatal victim is a woman, while the more than 40 injured have suffered injuries caused mainly by the explosion, which affected an area of about 300 meters around.
Gallardo reported that among the total number of injured there are two – an elderly man and a minor – who are in serious condition and have been hospitalized in the intensive care unit of the Ventanilla Hospital.
The explosion has generated a shock wave that has affected several nearby houses and an educational center in the area. The explosion also caused a fire inside the warehouse, according to local radio station RPP.
Firefighters have seen how the work of extinguishing the flames has been hampered by the explosion of rockets of different sizes, as well as other types of pyrotechnic material stored irregularly in the premises.
