Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Luis Fernando Helguero, has warned Mexican authorities that if they were to grant political asylum to the sister-in-law of former President Pedro Castillo, Yenifer Paredes, this would mean an «escalation of tensions» between the two nations.

Paredes, sister of former Peruvian first lady Lilia Paredes, is under investigation after a video was released showing her allegedly offering a sanitation project to the residents of the Succha community.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office has stated on several occasions that Paredes would be the main lobbyist within an alleged criminal organization that would be led by former President Castillo himself.

In the context of the recent political asylum granted by Mexico to Lilia Paredes and her children, Helguero has been questioned about whether, if the measure were to be repeated with Yenifer, it would be a provocation.

«Of course it would», the minister said before the microphones of Peru TV, where he acknowledged, however, that the hypothetical measures in response would in any case be the responsibility of both the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the President, Dina Boluarte.

At this point, Helguero acknowledged that he is waiting for the Mexican President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to lower tensions at some point and change his discourse with respect to the new Peruvian authorities, whom he accuses of having acted against Castillo.

Despite the diplomatic tension between Mexico City and Lima, Helguero has clarified that trade relations with the Aztec nation have not been damaged, as reported by the Peruvian radio station RPP.

«Mexico is our third commercial partner after Brazil and Chile, it is a very important partner», said the Minister in charge of Trade and Tourism, who also pointed out that Mexico is the second Latin American investor in Andean territory.
