Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador defended this Friday the report made by the Organization of American States (OAS) on Peru and warned of the attacks against the country’s president, Pedro Castillo, who is facing «a smear campaign».

López Obrador, who has regretted that many want to «disown» the Peruvian president, has asserted that «he was right to resort to the OAS». «They are accusing him of not being of sound mind or something like that, of moral incapacity», he warned during his morning press conference, known as ‘La Mañanera’.

Thus, he has indicated that these are «destabilizing attacks» by the opposition and has warned that Castillo «is being harassed». «It is quite clear what is happening,» he pointed out.

López Obrador stressed that opposition groups «seek to undermine the Peruvian government» and emphasized the need to understand «that he won in a democratic manner». In this sense, he asked to help him to «maintain governability and political stability».

His words come after the Peruvian Congress admitted Thursday a new impeachment petition against Castillo, who is accused of being morally unfit to hold office.
