U.S. Congressman Donald McEachin, a Democrat from the state of Virginia, died Monday just under a month after being re-elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, according to a statement from his press office.
«We are all devastated by the passing of our boss and friend, Congressman Donald McEachin,» said his chief of staff, Tara Rountree, in the statement released on social media.
«Bravely, for years, we have watched him fight and triumph over the side effects of his 2013 colorectal cancer. Tonight, he lost that battle, and the people of Virginia’s Fourth Congressional District lost a hero who always, always fought for them and put them first,» Rountree added.
McEachin, 61, had first been elected in 2016 to represent the Fourth District of the U.S. House of Representatives, all after serving in both chambers of the Virginia General Assembly, CNN details.
In the midterm congressional elections held on Nov. 8, the congressman had been re-elected in the race for his seat.
Now new elections must be called in his district to elect a new representative, although the victory will not imply any relevant change in the disposition of the Lower House, since the Republican Party has a majority of seats.
