U.S. President Joe Biden on Monday called on Congress to ban assault weapons after a shooting at an early childhood and elementary school in Nashville left at least three minors and three adults dead.
Biden has called the shooting »heartbreaking» and said gun violence, »a family’s worst nightmare,» is »tearing at the soul of this nation. »I again call on Congress to pass an assault weapons ban. It is time for us to start making more progress,» he said.
The U.S. president praised the local police, who responded in a matter of »minutes» to »end the danger» while reiterating that schools must be »protected» so that »they don’t become prisons,» as reported by NBC.
The attacker, 28, died during the police intervention. She was a former student of the Presbyterian College of the Alliance and a resident of Nashville, according to the latest police inquiries, which for the moment have not offered more details about her identity.
Officers entered through the first floor and shot the attacker, who had entered the school through a side entrance a short time earlier, armed with two assault rifles and a handgun. The shooting is the 129th this year, according to CNN.
