Rescue teams manage to free eight survivors six days after the earthquake

Turkish authorities have reported the rescue of at least eight people from the rubble in the last few hours despite six days having passed since the earthquake that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria and has already claimed nearly 40,000 lives, according to the latest count.

A 10-year-old girl, Aysima Baltaci, has been rescued from the rubble in the Yavuz Selim district of Bitlis province 160 hours after the quake, Turkish news agency Anatolia reports. Baltaci has already been taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Another 10-year-old girl and her father have been rescued from the rubble in Hatay province 159 hours after the landslide, while in the same province rescue teams from the Special Emergency and Immediate Response Unit of the Community of Madrid (ERICAM) have been involved in the rescue of a 55-year-old woman.

A three-year-old boy was rescued in the province of Kahramanmaras, one of the most affected by the earthquake, 158 hours after the quake. A 34-year-old man was also rescued in Hatay 155 hours after the earthquake, reports Anatolia.

Finally, an eight-year-old boy has been found and evacuated in Gaziantep province 155 hours after the landslide, while an 85-year-old woman could be rescued after 152 hours trapped.

The death toll from Monday’s 7.4 magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey, near the Syrian border, has risen to nearly 39,000 according to the latest toll.
