The French Foreign Ministry has welcomed the release of two French citizens by the Nicaraguan government, which on Thursday approved their deportation to the United States in an unprecedented measure that involves leaving a total of 222 opponents without Nicaraguan nationality.
«I welcome the release of our two compatriots, Jeannine Horvilleur Cuadra and Ana Carolina Alvarez Horvilleur, as part of the release of more than 220 prisoners arbitrarily detained in Nicaragua,» said French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna in a statement.
In this statement, Colonna highlighted the previous efforts made by Paris to try to obtain the release of the two women opponents, and also thanked Washington for its «commitment to this positive result».
«I reiterate France’s call for the return of the rule of law in Nicaragua, the immediate release of those arbitrarily detained, including Bishop Rolando Alvares, as well as respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms,» Colonna concluded.
The Nicaraguan government has authorized the release of more than 222 political prisoners, all of them considered «traitors to the homeland» by the regime of Daniel Ortega, and their «immediate deportation» to the United States, according to a ruling of the Court of Appeals of Managua read Thursday by a judicial spokesman.
They are accused of committing acts against the independence and sovereignty of Nicaragua, of «inciting» violence and terrorism, of perpetrating actions of «economic destabilization» or of harming «the supreme interests of the nation», explained Judge Octavio Rothschuh in a brief appearance broadcast by official television stations.
The list of benefited persons, released by the Parliament, includes prominent names of the dissidence during these last years, but not the aforementioned Rolando Alvarez, bishop of Matagalpa, whom the newspaper ‘La Prensa’ points out as one of the possible prisoners who has not accepted the expulsion.
