The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rome has opened an investigation against the Italian deputy of Brothers of Italy, Giovanni Donzelli, for revealing confidential information in the context of the imprisonment of the anarchist prisoner Alfredo Cospito.

The complaint, filed by Green Party deputy Angelo Bonelli, defends that Donzelli revealed confidential information during a debate of the Anti-Mafia Commission in the Chamber of Deputies that was not «available to parliamentarians.»

Specifically, Donzelli referred in the session to conversations that the anarchist, sentenced to life imprisonment, allegedly held in prison with several Italian bosses on January 12, as well as the visit of four members of the Democratic Party to the prison where he is being held.

«While he was talking with the mafiosi, he also met the parliamentarians Serracchiani, Verini, Lai and Orlando, who went to encourage him in the battle. So I want to know, Mr. President, if this left is on the side of the State or on the side of the terrorists with the mafia,» Donzelli, also vice president of the Parliamentary Commission for the Security of the Republic, assured.

The reaction to his words caused the suspension of the session, after which the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, ruled out «absolutely» that there was a relationship between the parliamentary representatives and the prisoner, as reported by Rai News.

Donzelli has assured Wednesday that he has not violated «any secret», since he was able to learn the information from «a report of the Ministry of Justice». «I was not given any confidential document,» he has defended.

Cospito, who is serving time for an attack on a business manager in 2012 and an attack on a police station in 2006, initiated the strike to demand that his crimes not be categorized as terrorism, as this opens the door to a harsher prison regime equivalent to that of mafia leaders.

Italy’s government stressed Tuesday that it will not give any favored treatment to Cospito after he was transferred from prison because of his health condition. His claim has also resulted in street protests and authorities are investigating the possible link of the case to attacks on Italian diplomatic facilities abroad.
