The White House confirmed Tuesday that Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will meet Friday, February 10, with his U.S. counterpart, Joe Biden, to discuss Washington’s «unwavering support» for Brazilian democracy.
«The two presidents will discuss the United States’ unwavering support for Brazil’s democracy and how the two countries can continue to work together to promote inclusiveness and democratic values in the region and around the world, particularly in the framework of the upcoming Democracy Summit in March,» he said in a statement.
Biden and Lula will also discuss other common «challenges» during their meeting, such as the fight against climate change, the protection of food security, the promotion of economic development, the strengthening of peace and security, and the management of regional migration.
Brazilian government sources confirmed Lula’s visit to the United States on January 19, after the White House sent a delegation to Brazil in December to deliver to the president an invitation from Biden to travel to Washington «as soon as possible».
The two leaders have already exchanged phone calls in recent weeks, as have their corresponding foreign ministers, Mauro Vieira and Antony Blinken.
