The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, reiterated on Tuesday his condemnation of «all acts of violence» in Bolivia during a meeting with the Bolivian Foreign Minister, Rogelio Mayta, in which he also stressed his commitment to Sucre.
«In (a) meeting with (Foreign) Minister Mayta we have addressed the situation in Bolivia, strongly condemning all acts of violence and stressing the importance of dialogue, respect for the rule of law, due process and justice reform,» Borrell has indicated in his Twitter profile.
For his part, Mayta said in the same social network that in his meeting with Borrell they reviewed the bilateral agenda, as well as shared «matters of interest». «We are working to strengthen our relations,» he added.
The EU already asked in January to avoid violence in the country and that due judicial process be respected in the case of the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, arrested and imprisoned for his role in the violent demonstrations and protests in 2019 that ended with the departure of then President Evo Morales from the country.
Camacho is the governor of the richest region of Bolivia and historically opposed to the governments of the Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), scene of protests and blockades, the last ones to oppose the census law.
His arrest is motivated by his role in the violent demonstrations and protests that took place after the opposition, supported by the Armed Forces, pressured former president Morales to renounce his victory in the October 2019 elections.
