Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office issued five arrest warrants on Friday, including those for the dismissed governor of the Federal District, Ibaneis Rocha, and the former interim secretary of Security Fernando de Souza Oliveira for the events of January 8 in the capital, when a mob of seditious supporters of Jair Bolsonaro attacked the headquarters of the three branches of government.
The objective of the authorities is to collect more evidence to help clarify why both would have failed to take the necessary measures to prevent the violent acts of that day. The Prosecutor’s Office order also entails new searches at the Buriti Palace, seat of government in the capital, as well as at the private homes of Rocha and Oliveira.
Rocha was momentarily removed from his position as governor of the Federal District for ninety days one day after the attacks following a ruling by Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes.
For his part, Oliveira assumed the position of interim secretary of Security of the capital while the incumbent, Bolsonaro’s former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, who is already in prison for alleged connivance and omission of his duties during the attacks, remained on vacation in the United States.
