Peruvian authorities have announced Tuesday a police reinforcement in the capital in view of the so-called ‘Toma de Lima’, a large anti-government demonstration taking place this Wednesday.
The head of the Lima Police Region, General Victor Zanabria, explained that during the day prior to the demonstration the agents have intervened several people who were traveling to participate in the protests, as he indicated to the radio station RPP.
In addition, Zanabria indicated that in the context of the marches there is «information and misinformation that distorts the data, since there are versions that indicate that three thousand people would have arrived from the region of Andahuaylas, a much higher figure than the one handled by the police force.
«We have groups that are arriving. We estimate that there will be approximately 800, and in one extreme, if it is true (…), there could be up to 2,000 (demonstrators). We are 2,600, I think we have enough capacity to control it and avoid any kind of disorder», he assured.
In this sense, the general warned that «within the people that would be moving to Lima there are infiltrated people that the demonstrators themselves refer to», for which reason the authorities are carrying out an identity control.
The president of Peru, Dina Boluarte, made hours before a call for «peace» and «calm» of the demonstrators, recalling that protests are protected by the Constitution of the country «as long as they are peaceful».
The Peruvian Ombudsman’s Office has confirmed nearly fifty deaths in the anti-government demonstrations that have been taking place since the dismissal of former President Pedro Castillo. Those attending the marches are demanding the release of Castillo, the resignation of Boluarte, and the calling of new elections.
