The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) party, a key partner in the Pakistani coalition government, has boycotted the local elections being held this Sunday in Hyderabad and, above all, in Karachi, the country’s financial center.
The formation made its decision public late on Saturday after a series of unsuccessful talks with local authorities over the voting system.
Faced with the refusal of the electoral authorities, the MQM-P has stood up after accusing the authorities of «manipulating» the elections, as denounced by the president of the local committee of the party, Jalid Maqbul, in statements reported by GEO TV.
The boycott of the MQM-P is an incentive for the former Prime Minister of the country Imran Jan, nemesis of the current government, who this past Saturday has declared his intention to prepare a vote of confidence against the current head of the government, Shebhaz Sharif.
Jan, ousted from power last year precisely after failing in a vote of confidence, has since dedicated himself to organizing massive protest marches to denounce the alleged conspiracy that ousted him from power, marked by the assassination attempt to which he was subjected in November during one of these meetings.
