The Islamabad High Court on Monday ordered the release on bail of Senator Azam Swati, arrested on November 27 for a message posted on Twitter critical of senior military officials.
Swati was arrested for «a highly offensive campaign of intimidating tweets (…) against state institutions,» according to the prosecution. It was the second time in less than two months that he was arrested for social media posts about the army.
The presiding judge, Aamer Faruk, ordered his release on bail of 200,000 rupees (about 827 euros), according to the Pakistani newspaper ‘Dawn’.
Swati’s party, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Jan, has expressed its satisfaction with the court decision as «the best start of 2023» and «an excellent ray of hope,» in the words of Senator Faisal Javed Jan.
«At last Azam Swati has been released, but will he also get justice?» asked PTI Secretary General Asad Umar, referring to calls for the prosecution of those responsible for his indictment.
