Peru’s Minister of Defense, Jorge Chávez, has ruled out for the moment the end of the citizen protests, which began after the dismissal and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo and in the context of which 27 deaths have been reported.
In declarations to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’, Chavez has encouraged the Executive and the Andean President, Dina Boluarte, to look for the appropriate mechanisms to approach the organizations that are promoting the protests.
Chavez has also urged the ministers and government officials to travel to those regions where the demonstrations are more intense to «try to calm, explain and satisfy the just demands of the population» and which, he considers, have been «totally unfulfilled».
«Both President Boluarte and the Prime Minister (Alberto Otárola) have asked us to intensify the dialogue, because this framework of violence and this crisis have not yet been closed», said Chávez, who said that this is the generalized position of the Executive.
Likewise, he has shown his conviction on the need to initiate a communication process between the bodies involved to address the electoral advance for April 2024, a proposal already approved by the Andean Parliament.
Finally, the Minister of Defense emphasized that, precisely after the certification of the electoral advance, the protests have diminished, although he insisted that they have not come to an end and asked for the identification of those mainly responsible for the violent demonstrations.
Sectors of Peru have taken to the streets of the country since Castillo was dismissed and arrested on December 7 after announcing the dissolution of Parliament and decreeing a government of exception, measures which were not supported and which the team of his successor called a «coup d’état».
Among the main demands of those attending the protests are both the resignation of Boluarte as head of state and the calling of early elections.
