The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, on Friday blamed the crisis in Peru, where the now former President Pedro Castillo is under arrest after being removed from office by Congress, on a «process led by oligarchies» to «subvert the will of the people».

The Cuban leader has thus indicated that the situation in Peru is the result of the actions carried out by these «dominant oligarchies» to put an end to the will of the people who «had elected their government in accordance with the Peruvian legal system».

Thus, in a message disseminated through Twiwter, Díaz-Canel has defended the «principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of States» and insisted that «it is up to the Peruvian people to find solutions to their challenges by themselves by virtue of their legitimate interests.» «These decisions must be respected», he pointed out.

This Wednesday, Peru’s Congress approved Castillo’s dismissal shortly after he announced the dissolution of Congress and declared a government of exception, all amid strong political pressure and investigations into alleged corruption against him since he assumed power in July 2021.

Castillo is now detained while the investigation continues against him for the alleged crime of rebellion after announcing that he was dissolving the Parliament. As required by the Constitution, the then vice-president, Dina Boluarte, has taken over the presidency.
